RCAL's goal is to transform food systems in Africa by introducing nutrient-rich crop varieties that are twice as nutritious and climate-resilient. We aim to reach 20,000 smallholder farmers across Ethiopia, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya by 2027, improving nutrition for over 170,000 people.
Oats, Barley and Wheat
2X Protein, 2-3X Minerals
Over 340 million people in Africa face severe food insecurity. Traditional crops often lack the nutritional density needed to combat malnutrition.
By developing and introducing nutrient-rich varieties of traditional crops, we can significantly improve nutrition and farmer livelihoods.
At RCAL, we're revolutionizing African agriculture through a three-pronged strategy. Our cornerstone is Accelerated Breeding, where we use cutting-edge technology to develop nutrient-rich crops in record time. This innovative process allows us to adapt quickly to local climates and nutritional needs, producing varieties with twice the protein and up to three times the essential minerals of traditional crops.
We don't work in isolation, though. Our success hinges on local partnerships with farmers, cooperatives, and research institutions across Ethiopia, Morocco, and Nigeria. These collaborations ensure our crops are not just nutritious, but culturally relevant and desired by local communities. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.
By focusing on enhancing crops already integral to traditional diets - like oats, barley, and wheat - we're building on existing agricultural practices and food preferences. This approach ensures long-term adoption and real, lasting impact on nutrition and livelihoods.
Through this holistic method, RCAL is not just breeding better crops; we're cultivating a future where food security and nutrition go hand in hand with cultural heritage and economic empowerment.
YAMNA, a women-led cooperative in rural Morocco, has successfully incorporated Rich Oats into their traditional couscous production, significantly boosting its nutritional value. This integration has not only enhanced local diets but also provided new economic opportunities for women in the cooperative, showcasing the dual impact of RCAL's work on nutrition and women's empowerment. NutriDense, a woman-owned enterprise in Ethiopia, has pioneered the country's first factory dedicated to producing locally-made oat foods using RCAL's nutrient-rich varieties. This initiative not only creates jobs and promotes gender equality in the food production sector but also significantly contributes to improving local food security and nutrition.
